Dia De Los Muertos Sugar Skulls, Created by Central Del Pueblo

The Arcata Playhouse announces the launch of The Round Story, a multi-year project which brings members of our small rural community together to address racial equity, social justice, and the changing of our demographic.

The Playhouse is partnering with the NAACP, the Native Women Collective, Centro del Pueblo, TRUEntertainment, and HSU to weave the threads from the stories that live in these communities.

Currently, the project will culminate in a multi-media theatrical performance at the Arcata Playhouse in the Fall of 2020.

The name The Round Story refers to the complex, many angled, multilayered, and nuanced nature of all stories. We acknowledge the inherent interdependence of the various communities in Humboldt society and recognize the need to foster the horizontal relations that build a true polyphony reflective of the diverse voices in our community.

We believe in the artist as a creative thinker, organizer, entrepreneur, and agent of change. Thus, it is through art that we form a network of mutual support, care, and healing.

The project is many-pronged and includes workshops on constructivist listening, on storytelling, on the effects of oppression in the body, and on racial equity. There will be shared stories in story circles, interviews (some recorded for the radio), as well as screenings of movies by the NAACP and TRUEntertainment.

Our stage will host theatrical performances, our lobby will be graced by the construction of an installation, and artists from the community will add new panels to our Art on the Fence.

Please, keep checking our website for upcoming information on the development of this project.
