Playhouse Arts is offering free art classes for our unhoused and housing insecure neighbors in different art disciplines: writing, painting, book binding, movement, music, storytelling, filmmaking, theater and more. We believe in the importance of having all voices contribute to creating culture, and in the need to humanize all experiences. We believe the arts are a transformative medium for self-knowledge, self-worth, and collective contribution toward the world we deserve.
This is a 5 month project that will end in late June with a show/showing of the developed work. The address is 854 9th St. in Arcata, also known as the Feruweker Building.
The space is open Wednesdays and Thursdays 1-4pm. The first hour is for arriving, having tea, coffee, a snack, and socializing. The projects and classes start at 2pm. We are beginning with a painting/installation memorial honoring those who died in the street, spearheaded by Laura Montagna.
As interest gains momentum, we will open the space other days of the week. We’ll add project information here as things move forward.
