TIMBATÁ

TIMBATA is a 7-piece Afro-Cuban band based in Humboldt County on the Northern California coast. The band members include Gary Davidson on bass, Tyler Hunt on Timbales & Percussion, Howie Kaufman on Steelpan & Percussion, Matt McClimon on keyboards, Nick Moore on Guitar, Eugene Novotney on Steelpan, Surya Sardonicus on Drumset, and DavidPeñalosa on Congas. Many of these band members have played music together in various groups for over 30-years.

The name, TIMBATA, pays homage to the musical roots of the band by combining the name of the contemporary Afro-Cuban music genre known as TIMBA and merging it with the name of the drums widely used in Afro-Cuban folkloric sacred music, known as the BATA. Folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythmic sensibilities guide the bands arrangements and overall sound, and the repertoire played by TIMBATA includes music from Cuba, Africa, Brasil, the Caribbean, and the United States.
