Artists in Schools

The Artists in Schools program brings working artists to schools to teach & inspire students of all ages throughout Humboldt County.

For over a decade, Playhouse Arts has brought high quality teaching artists and local schools together in our Arts Education program. Our program provides experienced teaching artists, assistant artists, and all the materials needed to complete the project. Schedule art classes for a specific grade level or your entire school community. We take great pride in bringing the joy of kinesthetic learning to your campus. Residencies : Choose one or more options to develop a sequential art curriculum that spans from Fall to Spring. Please note that a minimum of two one-hour classes is required for booking. Our workshops typically offer one hour long class per week for several weeks in a row.

Mask Making

A one hour class where students learn mask history and etiquette, while designing, sculpting, painting, and developing characters. 

Mask Performance

A one hour class each week where students get to move, develop character, write stories, learn stage direction, create their own stories, and host a performance of their work based on the masks that were created in the previous residency.

Shadow Puppetry

A one hour class each week where students learn about the art of collaboration, speaking, listening, plot development, writing, storytelling, and  character development through building their own puppets and presenting  a performance of their work.

Creative Drama & Dance

A one hour class each week where the teachers use creative play, movement, storytelling, and music to create a performance adapted from a familiar story.

Devised Theater

A one hour class each week where students collaborate in creating an original play or series of skits. Through improvisation, exploration and experimentation, students will learn the art of collaboration to generate their own material developing their own characters, plot and script. As an ensemble they continue to rehearse and refine the collective work until they have an original and innovative piece, culminating in presenting a performance.
