Hear, Here!

The emerging Arcata Public Sound Archive is inviting our Arcata community to gather sounds of parks through the seasons. This archive will serve as a publicly accessible resource for artists of various mediums, as well as culminate in an installation in fall 2026. For this first iteration of the project, we are collecting sounds from the following Arcata parks:

Greenview Playground

Stewart Park

Redwood Park

Larson Park

Arcata Marsh

You can record your soundscapes with any device you would like. A phone works great.

  1. Take an audio recording or video on your phone (~30 seconds to ~10 minutes)

  2. Upload to our archive via the button above, or emailing the file to hearhere@playhousearts.org

  3. Include date and which park in your submission

Tips:  Consider what sounds are specific to this place and to the moment that you are recording. Try different locations around the park—see how the sounds vary. A soundscape that is true to a place won't sound perfect or even pretty, necessarily-- it is a portrait of a moment in time.

What is a sound archive? Sound archives are an alternative way to document collective memory of a place.Sound archives can be used for many purposes including film, music, podcasts, art installations, and more. Some examples of sound archive projects are the World Soundscape Project, https://www.sfu.ca/~truax/wsp.html, or Cities and Memory https://citiesandmemory.com/

Having issues with the form? Files can also be emailed to hearhere@playhousearts.org. Please include the location and date of the recording in your email.
