Jazz is Peace: 2025 Thelonius Monk

On October 11th Creative Sanctuary is excited to present the final show of their Jazz is Peace series at the Arcata Playhouse by honoring Thelonious Monk a day after what would have been his 108th birthday.

Sometimes called "The High Priest" of Jazz music, Monk was an enigma and a major influence on music in the 20th century. A common myth told of him having little technique, and creating a personal style in spite of poor technique. Interviews with his family and peers has revealed this as pure myth: Monk was an accomplished classic pianist from his youth, his teacher stating that after a short period of lessons there nothing he could teach him. He mastered stride piano, and revolutionized Jazz harmony.
