OurSpace is an inclusive and free mobile arts program designed in collaboration with Arcata community members who are experiencing houselessness. Studies have shown that participation in the arts reduces stress and loneliness, increases cognitive and mental functioning, and provides health benefits equivalent to those of weekly exercise. It also creates a framework for social connection and accountability. We see OurSpace as a vital component in an ecosystem of services working with unhoused community members.

As part of our program, we provide free art supplies and space for artists to store their work. Many participants have lost works of art to the elements, theft or when belongings are confiscated, so having a place to leave their projects allows them to see their work through to completion, and in many cases share and sell their completed works. We also provide workshops and field trips.

OurSpace has published three compilations of participants’ work, hosted open-mics, pop-up art galleries and opportunities for participants to show and sell their work, and hosts a bi-weekly radio program on KHHA 94.7 FM in which participants create programming. You can listen live from 2-4pm on the 1st, 3rd and sometimes 5th Wednesday of the month or check out the archive at humboldthotair.org.
