Prelude to "Outliers & Outlaws", The Eugene Lesbian History Project: A Talk on Ruth Mountaingrove, "The Blatant Image” and Lesbian Feminist Photography at Rootworks Women’s Land


Learn the backstory to the film documentary "Outliers and Outlaws" with Kate Hitt at this Lunchbox talk at the Arcata Playhouse. Every lunchbox comes with homemade soup, salad, bread, and a beverage.


In 1974, Ruth and Jean Mountaingrove founded “WomanSpirit" magazine, dedicated to both feminism and spirituality. In 1978, they bought land in Southeastern Oregon for a collective women’s experience and called it Rootworks. Ruth also led “Ovulars” (photography workshops) and edited the feminist photography journal, “The Blatant Image”. Ruth moved to Arcata, California in 1985, where her writing, experimental photography, theatre, songs, and other artistic endeavors continued to flourish alongside her connections to lesbian friends, artists, poets and writers, and the academic world.
