Join us for a matinee tribute to the great Brazilian bossa nova composer hosted by trombonist/vocalist James Zeller with special guests Hernan Rostan and Jennifer Trowbridge (and more!) and “J Street Regulars” Matt Seno on piano, Ramsey Isaacs on drums and Danny Gaon on double bass.
The late 1950s were a time of open artistic expression and freedom in Brazil. In this creative environment, Antonio Carlos Jobim (with guitarist João Gilberto and others) created a new style of Brazilian music heavily influenced by Samba and American jazz that became known as Bossa Nova.
Bossa spread world wide in the early ‘60s, becoming a new rhythmic flavor utilized by musicians, especially jazz players. But the period of freedom and cultural expression that birthed Bossa Nova was about to come to an abrupt end when a U.S. backed military coup seized…
