The Tiptons March 3 & 4
The Tiptons are coming to the Arcata Playhouse to kick off the start of the Zero to Fierce Festival on March 3 and 4.
THE TIPTONS SAXOPHONE QUARTET & DRUMS are an internationally renowned all-female saxophone quartet with drums, celebrating over 30 years as a band. The Tiptons’ material ranges from micro-Big Band to Gospel, Bluegrass to Balkan, from whimsical Chamber Jazz to nocturnal Funk and Free Jazz Improvisation. Featuring saxophones, clarinet, powerful vocals with inventive drums, and percussion, they create a genre-busting ‘world soul’ sound. The band is named in homage of Billy Tipton, a female-born saxophonist who lived their life as a man in the 20th century to realize their dreams ~ and be a professional musician.

The Tiptons are Amy Denio (alto sax, clarinet, voice), joined by co-leader Jessica Lurie (soprano/alto/tenor sax, voice), Sue Orfield (tenor sax, voice), Tina Richerson (baritone sax, voice) and Xavier Lecouturier (drums, percussion). The Tiptons recently released their 14th album Wabi Sabi on CD and vinyl. https://thetiptonssaxquartet.com/

“ … some of the most lusciously irreverent music in jazz … Their deviously entertaining … one catchy, harmonically rich number after another, drawing on styles from Romany brass to Soca to dixieland and many points in between.” ~ The New York Music Daily
